Ampersand Opimus Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, 15 Years in Bourbon Barrels • Finished 9 Months in Tokaji Wine Casks

After sampling this release, Liquor Lineup’s Solomon came away convinced that Ampersand took a real gamble finishing a 15 year Kentucky straight bourbon in Tokaji casks. It’s a bold decision. Tokaji brings intensity, sweetness, and acidity in equal measure. In this case, the risk paid off with remarkable precision.

The mature bourbon lays the foundation: deep oak, vanilla bean, toasted grain, and warm spice built over a decade and a half in barrel. The 9 month Tokaji finish doesn’t mask that structure. Instead, it adds layers of honeyed stone fruit, golden raisin, baked apple, and a soft  lift that expands the palate and carries the finish longer than expected.

This is not a novelty or a dessert pour. It’s a measured, thoughtful finish that respects the age while elevating the experience.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Dark honey, vanilla custard, dried apricot, seasoned oak
  • Palate: Rich caramel, spiced orchard fruit, toasted almond, subtle wine sweetness
  • Finish: Long, polished, and gently warming with lingering oak and fruit

Best enjoyed neat to appreciate the full cask-strength expression. A few drops of water reveal additional fruit, honey, and spice without losing structure.

Why It Matters

Finishing a bourbon of this age is a high-wire act. Ampersand stepped out carefully, trusted the whiskey, and let the Tokaji casks enhance rather than dominate.

A bottle for seasoned bourbon drinkers who appreciate patience, balance, and when a well-calculated risk delivers real depth.
