This is Lagavulin without the tuxedo, sleeves rolled, boots in the peat. The Liquor Lineup team has a soft spot for Lagavulin’s annual 12 Year releases, especially when they arrive untouched and unapologetic at natural cask strength. In our book, this is how Lagavulin should always speak.
Liquor Lineup Take
If Lagavulin is going to release a statement whisky, it should arrive unfiltered by dilution. This 12 Year proves that cask strength isn’t excess, it’s honesty. Bold, coastal, and uncompromising, just the way Islay intended.
The 12 Year Cask Strength is leaner, sharper, and more electric than its older sibling. It trades velvet for voltage. Expect roaring Islay peat layered with lemon oil, green apple, brine, and medicinal smoke, followed by cracked pepper, sea salt, and smoldering driftwood. The higher proof doesn’t bully the palate, it amplifies it, turning each sip into a live performance rather than a studio recording.
Tasting Notes
- Coastal smoke, lemon zest, iodine, damp ash
- Palate: Bright peat, citrus oil, white pepper, maritime salinity
- Finish: Long, smoky, dry, and mineral-driven with lingering heat
How to Drink
Best enjoyed neat, or with a few intentional drops of water to let the citrus and smoke unfurl like stage lights coming up slowly.
